Democracy in Evil Times: The Political Science of Paranoid Uncertainty Abdelwahab El-Affendi
Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and Professor of Politics and International Relations , Doha Institute for Graduate Studies Professor El-Affendi, was the founder of Democracy and Islam Programme at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster, and its coordinator since 1998. He was also ESRC/AHRC Fellow in the RCUK Global Uncertainties Programme and has been Visiting Fellow at Bergen, Oxford, Northwestern, Cambridge, and has lectured at most major US and UK universities, plus many in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. His most recent books include: Genocidal Nightmares: Narratives of Insecurity and the Logic of Mass Atrocities(2015), Darfur: A Decade in Crisis (2013), About Muhammad: The Other Western Perspective on the Prophet of Islam (2011). He is also co-author of the Arab Human Development Report (2004), and the two reports Contextualizing Islam in Britain (2009, 2012). His current research interests include: the crisis of Arab democracy; the role of Muslim intellectuals; terrorism and humanitarian intervention, and secularism and power. El-Affendi also worked as a pilot (1976-1981), managing editor of Arabia (1982-1989), and diplomat (1990-1997). He was the 2006 recipient of the Muslim News Allama Iqbal Award for Creativity in Islamic Thought and is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Science and Manufacture (RSA) and member of the Political Studies Association. |
